Two Book Recommendations on International Women’s Day

Today is <a href=“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women” onclick=“javascript:_gaq.push([’_trackEvent’,‘outbound-article’,‘http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women’]);“s_Day” target=“_blank”>International Women’s Day. Rather than disparaging this day as a socialist, leftist, agenda-driven waste of time, it is helpful to consider the condition of women around the world. I recommend the following two books:

Half the Sky:  Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn

  • Half the Sky describes the oppressed and often violated condition of women in the developing world. It is sobering and eye-opening.

  • Keren wrote about the book here.

Half the Church:  Recapturing God’s Global Vision for Women, by Carolyn Custis James

While you may not agree with all the assertions or conclusions of these books (as with pretty much any book), you will profit from a greater understanding of and appreciation for the role of women in the world and in the church.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
