Today is International Women’s Day. Rather than disparaging this day as a socialist, leftist, agenda-driven waste of time, it is helpful to consider the condition of women around the world. I recommend the following two books:
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn
- Half the Sky describes the oppressed and often violated condition of women in the developing world. It is sobering and eye-opening.
- See the book on Amazon
- Visit the website.
- Keren wrote about the book here.
Half the Church: Recapturing God’s Global Vision for Women, by Carolyn Custis James
- Recognizing that women are often marginalized in the church, this book makes the case for greater contribution of women in the church today.
- See the book on Amazon.
- Watch a video about the book.
While you may not agree with all the assertions or conclusions of these books (as with pretty much any book), you will profit from a greater understanding of and appreciation for the role of women in the world and in the church.
